The Art of Followership

How Great Followers Create Great
Leaders and Organizations

Edited by Ronald Riggio, Ira Chaleff, and Jean Lipman-Blumen
With a Forward by James MacGregor Burns
February 2008; ISBN: 978-0-7879-9665-9; Jossey-Bass, a Wiley Imprint

The marketplace is inundated with numerous books on leadership, discussing everything from how to become a great leader to biographies of the most amazing and disappointing leaders of our time. An ongoing conversation continues as we decipher between toxic or bad leaders and forward-thinking and strong leaders; yet studies of an often forgotten group—Followers—has largely been ignored.

We live in a culture that honors Leaders, but what about the necessary counterpart? Is it acceptable to be a good Follower? And, why is a deeper look at this dynamic relationship between leader and follower important in our world today? Would George Bush’s Presidency have unfolded differently if the staff around him and Vice President Cheney and Defense Secretary Rumsfeld conceived of their role towards their leaders differently, more assertively? Would the Enron story have had a happier ending had Sherron Watkins spoken up earlier or Chairman Ken Lay paid more attention to the alarms his devoted follower was raising? And what role have engaged followers played beyond the view of outsiders that have helped highly successful CEO’s make the right calls at the right time?

THE ART OF FOLLOWERSHIP: is a groundbreaking book that explores how followers contribute to effective leadership and to organizations overall. As this book reveals, the leader-follower dynamic is far more complex than has been previously imagined. The Art of Followership puts leader-follower interaction at the forefront of discussion. It examines the multiple roles followers play and their often complex relationship to leaders.

Drawing from various disciplines—from philosophy, to psychology and management, to education—the book defines followership and its myriad meanings. The Art of Followership explores the practice and research that promote positive followership and reveals the part that followers play in setting the standards and formulating the culture and policies of the group. The contributors also include new models of followership and explore fresh perspectives on the contributions that followers make to groups, organizations, societies, and leaders. They also take a critical look back on the most current research on followership and provide insights and perspectives on the future of leader-follower relationships.

As James MacGregor Burns, an iconic voice in the field of leadership, confirms in his forward –“Dealing with the complexities – the multiple roles of leaders and followers in diverse polities, the intersecting as well as the clashing of leadership cultures, the traps inevitable in ‘toxic’ or ‘bad’ leadership, the potential of leadership created by benign or hostile forces, and above all the moral and ethical values that penetrate – or should penetrate – leaders’ decision-making – this type of challenging question faces students and practitioners of leadership. I know of no work that faces this challenge so well as THE ART OF FOLLOWERSHIP. I expect it to be a landmark work in the complexities of the leader-follower dynamic.”

THE ART OF FOLLOWERSHIP is sure to make a great impact on this timely and critical discussion.

The Practice of Leadership: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders
(15th annual Kravis-de Roulet Leadership conference proceedings)

Edited by Jay A. Conger and Ronald E. Riggio
Jossey Bass Publisher (Novermber 2006); ISBN: 978-0-7879-8305-5

"Jay Alden Conger and Ronald Riggio have brought together a galaxy of sophisticated yet practical experts on leadership, stressing both the complexity and indispensability of both transactional and transforming leadership, with the blessing of the pioneering student of leadership, Bernie Bass."
--James MacGregor Burns, professor emeritus, Williams College, and Pulitzer Prize winner

This book includes contributions from top scholars who outline the best leadership practices for the benefit of the practicing leader. Each chapter focuses on a specific area of leadership practice and ends with a set of “take away” best practices in each area--an executive summary in reverse--that will serve as a quick reference for those who might want to peruse chapters, but still extract the best practices, as well as a summary for those who thoroughly read each chapter. The goal of this edited volume is to draw upon the breadth and depth of research on leadership to inform the practice of leadership. We have engaged the leading scholar in critical areas of leadership – from leader selection and development to the assessment of leadership to leadership at the top of organizations to team leadership to leading change – to summarize the relevant research and extract a set of best practices for use by practitioners. These chapters are the collected, reviewed, and edited works emanating from our 15th annual Kravis-de Roulet Leadership Conference, “Best Practices in Leadership,” held in February of 2005, at Claremont McKenna College. The audience for this book will be the “sophisticated” practitioner of leadership – the individual who keeps abreast of the most recent developments in scholarship in leadership – as well as scholars and students of leadership.

The Quest For Moral Leaders: Essays on Leadership Ethics
(14th annual Kravis-de Roulet Leadership conference proceedings)

Edited by Joanne B. Ciulla, Terry L. Price and Susan E. Murphy
Edward Elgar Publishing (March 2006); ISBN: 1845425340

The quest for moral leaders is both a personal quest that takes place in the hearts and minds of leaders and a pursuit by individuals, groups, organizations, communities and societies for leaders who are both ethical and effective. Two distinct factors make up the ethics of leadership different from its ethics of leadership different from the ethics of other individuals. The first is power - the way leaders exercise it and the temptations that come with it. The second is the moral relationship they have with followers and the range of people with whom they have moral relationships and obligations. In The Quest for Moral Leaders, the contributions explore how leaders themselves view their role, as well as the ways in which leadership functions within business, politics and society. The volume begins with chapters examining how religious beliefs and emotions color the way leaders make decisions. The second section covers how leaders think about morality, while the books, final chapters shift our attention to the function of leadership within organizations.

From Work-Family Balance to Work-Family Interaction: Changing the Metaphor
(13th annual Kravis-de Roulet Leadership conference proceedings)

Edited by Diane F. Halpern and Susan E. Murphy
Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc; ISBN: 0-8058-4886-X

There are many lessons to be learned about work-family interaction. It is clear that some people have learned how to combine work and family in ways that are mutually supporting--at least much of the time--and some employers have created work environments and policies that make positive interdependence of these two spheres more likely to occur. This book discusses measures of work-family, conflict, policies designed to reduce conflict, comparisons with other industrialized nations, and reasons why family-friendly work-policies have not been adopted with enthusiasm. The purpose is to consider a broad range of topics that pertain to work and family with the goal of helping employers and working families understand the work-life options that are available so they can make choices that offer returns-on-investments to employers, families, and society at large that are consistent with personal and societal values. This book brings together a superb panel of experts from different disciplines to look at work and family issues and the way they interact. Part I is an overview--with a brief discussion by a psychologist, economist, and a political scientist--each of whom provide their own interpretation of how their discipline views this hybrid field that none exclusively "owns." Part II considers the business case of the question of why employers should invest in family-friendly work policies, followed by a section on the employer response to work family interactions. Families are the focus of the Part IV, followed by a look at children--many of whom are at the heart of work and family interaction.

Multiple Intelligences and Leadership
(9th annual Kravis-de Roulet Leadership conference proceedings)

Edited by Ronald. E. Riggio, Susan E. Murphy, Francis J. Pirozzolo
Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc; ISBN: 0805834664

Is high IQ a prerequisite for a leader? This volume brings together well-known researchers in the field of intelligence who are investigating the multiple domains or facets of intelligence. Traits such as social, emotional, and practical intelligence are also considered, including the role that multiple intelligences play in effective leadership.

In many ways these two fields, intelligence and leadership, have been moving along parallel lines. We are only beginning to understand the concept of multiple intelligences, and starting to explore its relationship to leadership. This line of research can be applied to the selection, training, and development of future leaders.

Transformational Leadership

Edited by Bernard M. Bass and Ronald E. Riggio
Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc.; ISBN: 0-78058-4762-6; 2006

Bernie Bass' legacy is an international tidal wave of researchers and scholars exploring transformational leadership. The study of leadership has many mothers, but it was Bernie Bass who became its driving force. We are delighted to have this new edition of Transformational Leadership and to find the markedly thoughtful influence of leadership scholar and social psychologist Ron Riggio. It brings in substantial new findings, consolidates and conceptualizes previous work, and brings the work of leadership to life with real leaders in real-life situations.

Power Mentoring

Edited by Ellen Ensher and Susan Murphy
Jossey-Bass; ISBN: 078797952X

Many of the world's most successful people (Bill Gates and Bill Clinton, for example) credit mentoring as a major factor in their achievements. Research shows that mentoring can be a very effective way to advance one's career and improve one's knowledge and skills. But the traditional models of mentoring have failed to keep up with trends in the business world - programs based on career longevity with one organization no longer mesh with what's really happening. Individuals need to be proactive in creating mentor-protégé relationships, establishing networks of multiple relationships across organizations and industries. The authors provide strategies for establishing such "Power Mentoring" relationships, and support their concept through interviews with 50 top leaders and their rising-star protégés in technology, politics, and the media.

Applications of Nonverbal Communication
(Claremont Symposium on Applied Social Psychology)

Edited by Ronald E. Riggio and Robert S. Feldman
Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc; ISBN: 0-8058-4334-5

Each and every day, in every social interaction, we communicate our feelings, attitudes, thoughts, and concerns nonverbally. Nonverbal communication is used to convey power and status, it is used to express love and intimacy, it is used to communicate agreement, to establish rapport, and to regulate the flow of communication. Nonverbal communication is pervasive, ongoing, and it is part of virtually every human endeavor. The goal of this edited volume is to present the practical applications suggested by research in non-verbal communication, as well as to highlight the limitations-noting where we simply do not yet know enough to safely and fully inform practice. The book is divided into four parts. The first part looks at the health applications of nonverbal communication, including medical health care settings. The second part looks at the legal and political applications of nonverbal communication, including its application to the courtroom. The third part examines nonverbal communication in business and education. The final part looks at social and cultural issues. This book is intended to appeal to a diverse group of practitioners, researchers, and students from a variety of disciplines including psychology, sociology, communications, anthropology, and management interested in the topic of nonverbal communication. It may also serve as a supplement in upper level undergraduate and/or graduate courses on nonverbal communication.
