Professional Development Workshops
Great leaders are great communicators. They think clearly, they speak clearly, and they write clearly.
In the spirit of developing well-rounded students with a range of abilities to prepare them for leadership positions, the program hosts a variety of professional development workshops. In some cases these are administered by faculty and in other cases by guest presenters.
Financial Modeling and Valuation - Business leaders need to be fluent in the vocabulary and techniques commonly used in financial modeling and asset valuation; these workshops, led by representatives from Training The Street, help students develop these skills through mini-lectures, group projects, computer exercises, and hands-on instruction.
Communicating Quantitatively - As Robert Day Scholars build their quantitative skills, particularly during the graduate year, it's important to also learn how to convey data and esoteric information to both professional and lay audiences through graphic display and clear writing.
Oral Communication: Business and Organizational - From interviewing to presenting to managing employees, students learn how to speak and listen effectively in a professional environment.
Fundamentals of Logic - Understanding and structuring arguments not only aids communication, it also helps clarify thinking; this classically based workshop introduces students to formal logical reasoning and argument structure.
Business Writing - Much of a leader's time is spent writing and reviewing letters, memos, proposals, and reports; this workshop seeks to help students make these forms of communication more effective.
Interviewing Skills - One of the challenges facing new entrants into the labor market is distinguish himself or herself during the interview process. This workshop for the Robert Day Scholar will focus on assessing interviewing skills and building the skill set necessary to interview successfully.
